Gutters are the uncelebrated part of the roof system. When they work, water leaves the eave and arrives at the ground away from the foundation. When they do not, the same water stains fascia, wets soffits, and shows up in the basement, and everyone looks at the shingles first. Some gutter problems are a Saturday repair. Some mean the trough itself is done.
Repair is enough when the metal is still sound
Reattach a loose hanger. Reseal a corner joint that opened. Clear a downspout that gurgles because of a seed ball. Reset a section that pitches back toward the house by a small amount. Those are repairs. If the gutter holds water when the downspout is open, look at pitch and clogs before you look at a new product.
Also look at where the downspout releases. A perfect gutter that dumps against the foundation is doing half the job. Extensions and splash blocks are cheap compared with a wet crawl space.
Replacement starts to make sense here
- The gutter pulls away from the fascia in long runs, not at one hanger.
- Seams split again after they were sealed, because the metal has fatigued.
- Rust has perforated the trough, or aluminum is creased and holds a pond in the middle of a run.
- Water sheets behind the gutter at the fascia even after a cleaning, which often means the roof edge and the gutter no longer meet.
- You are reroofing anyway, and the gutters have to come off for the drip edge.
Fascia rot behind a leaking gutter is common and easy to miss from the lawn. If the wood is soft, a new gutter screwed into it will sag again. The scope should include fascia repair, not only a new trough. That conversation belongs with whoever is already pricing the roof if both are open.
Size and placement

If they are failing, yes, because the drip edge and the gutter have to fit each other. If they are straight, tight, and dry, a careful crew can remove and reset them. Put “reset” or “replace” in the roof contract so it is not a surprise invoice.
